In Japanese, “Shiatsu” means finger pressure and has been described as needle-free acupuncture.
In a Shiatsu treatment, the whole body (with the client clothed) is worked on, using a combination of opening stretches plus comfortable pressure, ranging from gentle to deep, applied with palms, fingers, forearms and sometimes feet. It is a profoundly nurturing and relaxing experience.
But Shiatsu goes well beyond being just a treatment for relaxation.
This form of bodywork, like acupuncture, is based on the highly effective and extensive theory of Oriental medicine. This provides an informed basis for practitioners to work with a wide range of health problems. Vital energy (known as Ki in Japanese) flows throughout the body in a series of energy channels. The practitioner will assess where this has become blocked and apply skilled pressure to restore the flow. This can help to relieve symptoms and stress at all levels of our being, whether physical, emotional, mental or spiritual. It can stimulate the immune system, renew a sense of vitality and leave the client with a clear and refreshed mind.
Shiatsu is also used by many as a way of maintaining good health and preventing disease from arising.
